Emmy Award-winning Chief Meteorologist Steve Raleigh is WCPO-TV's chief meteorologist.
With more than two decades of experience, Raleigh has led the nation in the broadcast meteorology field with his work, most recently at KRON-TV in San Francisco. He pioneered the country's first instant weather information access, the California Weather Network.
Raleigh is eager to return to Cincinnati with his wife, a Cincinnati native, and their four children.
Some of his recent career highlights include forecasting through three separate El Nino outbreaks, covering the tornado outbreak in Oklahoma City and broadcasting across the Southeast during his coverage of Hurricane Floyd. He was also the first person to forecast weather from the top of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Before San Francisco, Raleigh worked at WCNC-TV in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was chief meteorologist for two-and-a-half years. During his tenure there, Raleigh was the lead forecaster during Hurricane Hugo. His forecasting during the disaster led to national honors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and he was credited with saving lives with his outstanding coverage.
Prior to WCNC, Raleigh worked at WLWT-TV in Cincinnati as weekend weather anchor and general assignment reporter. Following his coverage of a devastating tornado outbreak, Raleigh took on the additional task of operating the market’s only Kentucky news bureau. A respected journalist, Raleigh was tapped to establish and anchor a nightly bureau report while he managed a small staff.
Before moving to Cincinnati, Raleigh lived in Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked at WREG-TV. His first television job was at WLBT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi. There, he worked with a tornado-chasing crew while maintaining duties as a meteorologist and a reporter. He was named Best Small Market Weatherman by the Associated Press in 1983. Raleigh's broadcasting experience also includes work in radio as a news reporter, announcer and host of public affairs shows.
Raleigh is the recipient of a 2000 Northern California Emmy Award for Best News Talent. He has also received the seal of approval from both the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society, which selected him to be an educational mentor for Bay Area science teachers. Raleigh credits his father, a long-time radio personality, for giving him a better understanding of broadcasting.
Raleigh has a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University. Next, he was off to The University of North Carolina-Charlotte in a Masters of Meteorology program for his post-graduate work.
Raleigh stays busy donating his time as a master of ceremonies for a number of charities. In 2002, he was honored as “Volunteer Of The Year” by Diablo Magazine. Raleigh enjoys sports, especially basketball. He is married with four children.
