President Bush is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch of the game, so security will be tighter than usual, and that means there will be more street closings than usual.
There is good news for drivers - the one-block section of Fifth Street between Vine and Walnut streets that has been closed for the past 45 or so days, will re-open to vehicular traffic by 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 2.
"We want to thank downtown workers, business owners and visitors for their cooperation during this important step in the Fountain Square garage renovation," said 3CDC president Steve Leeper.
Good parking price: There's $2 parking at Newport on the Levee's garage. You can walk over the Taylor Southgate Bridge to the ballpark.
Try the bus: Metro bus doesn't offer any special shuttles for Opening Day, but they do have some detours because of the street closures.
Presidential Visit - Ohio River Closure
The U. S. Coast Guard is working closely with the U.S. Secret Service to ensure the safety and security of ball game attendees as well as the President of the United States. The following regulations have been implemented:
The Coast Guard is establishing a "Security Zone" extending from the Ohio bank to the Kentucky bank between from the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge (I-471) bridge (river mile 469.6) to the Brent Spence Bridge (I-75) (river mile 471.3) which includes the waters in front of the Great American Ballpark/Reds Stadium. The "Security Zone" will be in effect from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. on April 3rd, 2006.
The Ohio River will be closed to commercial tow traffic from the I-471 Bridge to I-75 Bridge from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Vessels shall stop at a safe area outside of the zone.
No vessel traffic will be allowed to transit or enter the Security Zone between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and approximately 3:15pm and 4:15pm. Passenger vessels operating during the game and recreational vessels will be permitted to drop off or pick up passengers at the Public Landing on the Ohio Bank up until 1 p.m., between 2:00 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., and after 4:15 p.m. Vessels requiring entry into or passage shall contact the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF Marine Channel 16 or 13 and request permission from the on scene Commander. Game attendees should plan on needing additional time and leave early to arrive at the game prior to the first pitch.
All vessels will be prohibited from mooring, anchoring, or loitering within the Security Zone except at a Army Corp of Engineers permitted facility, such as a floating restaurant, and then only with the facility owner's permission.
